Our Animals During the Winter Weather

A little note of reassurance on the winter welfare of Salt & Pepper (our goats), Coco, Cowboy and Patch (our Rabbits) and of course our chickens.
We want to reassure you that all animals on our site are well cared for, regularly checked, and fully compliant with welfare standards. All animals are registered with DEFRA, and their care arrangements are appropriate, lawful, and monitored.
Rabbits, chickens, and goats are species that commonly live outdoors for their entire lives, including through winter conditions. All animals have access to sheltered, dry, and insulated coops or huts at all times and are free to use them whenever they choose. If they wanted to be inside, they would be.
Outside of school term time our animals are seen twice daily. Each morning, fresh water is provided (replacing any frozen supplies) and food is given. Evening checks are also carried out. Goats are turned out daily to graze in the field, as is appropriate for their welfare. Additionally they are cleaned and bedding refreshed twice weekly.
Regarding the chickens: during school holidays they are kept enclosed due to a known local fox risk. During term time, they are out all day, every day. This is a safeguarding measure, not a welfare concern.
We know many of you enjoy coming along to see the animals through their fences and we love this (and so do they!)
