Pathways to AP Admission

Direct School referral (DSR)Schools can refer children to our part-time SEMH Alternative Provision for up to three sessions per week. Schools fund this provision directly.Any school can refer — an EHCP is not required. Funded directly by the referring school. Sessions run Monday to Thursday. Available at both our Three Bridges and Hogsmill sites. Schools can choose 1 to 3 days per week. To refer, complete the Direct School Referral Form below.

EISS / APPPReferrals can be made via Kingston’s Education Inclusion Support Service (EISS) through the APPP route. You will have been directed to refer this way by the service.Schools or professionals from the Education Inclusion Support Service (EISS) or SEN Team should refer via this route. The child must have an EHCP and already be known to the service. Part-funded as part of the child’s placement package. Sessions run Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Delivered at our Hogsmill site. To refer, complete the APPP (Alternative Provision Placement Panel) Referral Form below.

Outside of Borough ReferralWe will consider referrals from councils outside of Kingston upon Thames. However, travel to and from our sites for the young person would need to be a consideration. Any school can refer — an EHCP is not required.Funded directly by the referring school or home Council Sessions run Monday to Thursday.Available at both our Three Bridges and Hogsmill sites.Schools & Professionals can choose 1 to 3 days per week.To refer, complete the Direct School Referral Form below.

Private ReferralWe will consider referrals from parents of young people without a named school, for example, those who are home educated. In these cases, parents are responsible for the fees. Young People cannot have a "named school" on this pathway and must have a main presenting need of SEMH.Only for families with a young person NOT on roll at a named school.You may complete a Direct School Referral (DSR) Form yourself.Tick the relevant section for Home Education or Out of Education.A member of our team will contact you to discuss next steps.

Due to the high number of referrals and enquiries we receive, we are unable to offer individual visits before a formal referral has been received and reviewed.A referral must be submitted and accepted for consideration before a visit can be arranged. This helps us ensure that the young person meets our admissions criteria and that we are likely to be able to meet their needs before inviting families and professionals to visit.We understand that choosing the right provision is an important decision, and we do not want to raise expectations or disappoint young people and families by arranging visits where a placement may not be appropriate or available.Once we have reviewed a referral and believe we may be able to offer a suitable placement, we will be very happy to arrange a visit as part of the next stage of the process.

We primarily support young people who are struggling to access or engage successfully with mainstream education. Many of our young people have SEMH needs, experienced trauma, anxiety, emotionally based school avoidance, difficulties with regulation or emerging additional needs.

No. We support young people both with and without an EHCP. The referral and funding route will depend on the young person’s circumstances.

Our placements are designed as meaningful interventions rather than short-term respite. We generally require a minimum commitment of 19 weeks to allow relationships to develop and meaningful progress to be made.

Most young people attend for one or two days per week, depending on their needs, the aims of the placement and availability. Our AP operates in sessions rather than as a replacement for a full-time school timetable.

In most cases, yes. The referring school remains responsible for the young person’s overall education and statutory responsibilities unless a different arrangement has been formally agreed.

Sessions combine outdoor learning, practical activities, relationship-building, emotional regulation and personalised learning opportunities. Our approach is deliberately flexible and responds to the needs and interests of each group.

Yes! We support young people whose behaviour may communicate significant unmet needs, but we are not simply a provision for removing disruptive pupils from school. Referrals must have clear outcomes and the placement must be appropriate for both the individual and the existing group.

Yes, where we believe we can safely and effectively meet their needs. We consider the nature, frequency and severity of behaviours alongside the needs of our existing cohort. Full and honest disclosure at referral is essential.

We require comprehensive and up-to-date information, including relevant safeguarding information, behaviour and risk information, attendance, SEND needs, EHCP documentation where applicable, current professional involvement and the reasons for referral. Failure to disclose significant information may result in a placement being reviewed or withdrawn.

We consider the young person’s needs, risks, desired outcomes and presentation alongside the dynamics of the proposed group. Being able to offer a space does not automatically mean that the placement is suitable.

We maintain regular communication with referrers and share relevant information about safeguarding, attendance, progress and significant incidents. We do this vis email and telephone. We also contribute to professional meetings, reports and reviews where appropriate.

Potentially, but attendance at our AP does not guarantee admission to Berrylands School. Young people must normally have attended our AP for at least 19 weeks before we would consider whether a consultation to Berrylands School may be appropriate. Admission to the school is subject to separate criteria, suitability, availability and the formal local authority consultation process.

We are an outdoors-first, relational and trauma-informed provision. We work with young people who often need something fundamentally different from a traditional classroom environment. Our small groups, consistent adults and practical approach give young people the space to regulate, build trust and reconnect with learning.
